The former Garden City Arena property in St. Catharines is poised for a large-scale development of more than 800 rental apartment units spread across four buildings in a pending “game changer” sale that has been green-lit by city council.

Councillors — council is the sole shareholder in St. Catharines Municipal Development Corp. — unanimously approved entering into an agreement of purchase and sale for 8 Gale Cres. and 29 Riordon St. after a closed-door shareholder meeting Monday night.

“That is a transformational project for downtown St. Catharines,” Tim Herbert, the corporation’s general manager, said in an interview.
