DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - More students are showing up for class more often, according to new figures from the Iowa Department of Education.
The Reynolds administration says this reflects a series of changes in the public school system.
Students who are chronically absent dropped nearly six percentage points in a single school year.
“The state’s average percentage of K-12 public school students who are chronically absent, meaning they missed 10% or more of school days or instructional time, dropped 5.8 percentage points since last year, falling to 15.8%. That’s an almost 10 percentage point decrease, a 9.8 percentage point decrease in chronic absenteeism over the past 3 years,” said McKenzie Snow, Director Iowa Department of Education.
