Climate justice activist Emily Lowan won the BC Green party’s leadership race in decisive fashion on Wednesday, taking victory with more than 60 per cent of the vote on the first ballot.

Lowan’s strategy focused on signing up young new members, and placed a heavy emphasis on an inventive social media campaign.

“This was truly an electric campaign that brought hope to so many people across B.C. who were completely disillusioned by politics,” she said. “So I’m honoured to have the opportunity now to bring this at scale across B.C.”

Lowan dominated the race on the first ballot, with 3,189 votes compared to Jonathan Kerr’s 1,908 votes and Adam Bremner-Akins 128 votes. By comparison, previous leader Sonia Furstenau needed two ballots to win in 2020, having failed to capture enough votes in t
