SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners are on the verge of history with the division crown potentially hours away.

With five games left in the regular season, Seattle sits atop the American League West and could clinch its first division title since 2001 as early as Wednesday. The Mariners hold a three-game lead over Houston and own the head-to-head tiebreaker. Any combination of a Mariners win or Astros loss that totals one will lock up the crown.

Seattle has already secured a playoff berth , the club’s second in the past four seasons and the sixth in franchise history.
