SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners ended more than two decades of frustration Wednesday night, clinching their first American League West title since 2001.

Seattle’s 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies at T-Mobile Park marked the club’s 89th victory of the season. The result locked the Mariners into at least the No. 3 seed in the American League playoffs, with a chance to climb to the No. 2 slot on Thursday. A higher seed would give Seattle a first-round bye and direct entry into the Division Series beginning Oct. 4 on FOX/FS1.

The Mariners hold head-to-head tiebreakers over both the Cleveland Guardians and Detroit Tigers, the top contenders in the AL Central. If current standings hold, Seattle would host the winner of the Guardians-Tigers wild card series. It would be the first MLB postseason
