CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - Work on a first of its kind archaeological research center is underway in the Lowcountry in an effort to advance resources and education surrounding the history of the Mitchelville community, who are descendants of formerly enslaved people in America.
In late September, people gathered to break ground on this new facility. It will create a resource to study the community. Mitchelville was a self governing community by enslaved people who were freed by the Union Army during the Civil War.
Today, descendants like Johnnie Mitchell have been working to help more people learn about this part of American History.
