Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the government’s Next-Generation GST reforms have significantly reduced the tax burden on the poor and middle class while improving the ease of doing business.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show 2025 in Greater Noida, Modi compared the tax structure before and after GST.

“Before 2014, a Rs 1,000 shirt carried a tax of Rs 117. After GST was introduced in 2017, the tax dropped to Rs 50. Now, under Next-Gen GST, only Rs 35 is levied,” the Prime Minister said.

He added that the structural reforms in GST would “give new wings to India’s growth story” and promised further steps to make India’s tax system simpler, fairer, and more growth-oriented.
