TOKYO - Canada’s Gabriel Diallo pushed second-seeded Taylor Fritz to a third-set tiebreak, but ultimately lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in first-round action Thursday at the Japan Open tennis tournament.

Diallo, who’s ranked 35th in the world, double-faulted to give Fritz a 6-3 lead in the tiebreak and three match points.

The American then smashed an ace on his first chance to win the match, which finished in two hours and nine minutes.

The 23-year-old Diallo from Montreal fell to 0-3 against Fritz, who won in straight sets when the two met in third-round play at last month’s National Bank Open in Toronto.

Fritz will play Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the second round.
