Australians have expressed their amusement and disbelief after an American residing down under completely misunderstood a very common local birthday tradition.

Aussies young and old gleefully shout ‘hip hip hooray’ in unison at a birthday celebrations, but social media users are finding out it's not as worldwide as they believed.

An American living in Australia posted a video to TikTok declaring that “Aussie birthdays are insane” and said he was floored by a practice he mistakenly coined as “Hibib Hooray.”

“Aussies do this thing called a ‘Habib hooray’ where basically you sing the birthday song, but then at the end you go ‘Habib hooray, Habib hooray,” the young man said, visibly confused by the tradition.
