The Karnataka High Court on Thursday issued an interim order regarding the state’s socio-economic and education survey, also referred to as the caste census. The bench clarified that participation in the survey is not mandatory and directed the government to make a public announcement stating that providing information is voluntary.
The court further emphasised that surveyors cannot insist that individuals furnish details and that all data collected must be stored confidentially, with access restricted solely to the Commission for Backward Classes.
The bench also directed the Commission to submit an affidavit confirming compliance with these instructions. Following the issuance of the interim order, the hearing was adjourned.
