An administrative law judge has ruled that the city of Troy illegally fired volunteer firefighter Edward Ross last year after he filed to run for city council, and ordered that he be reinstated retroactive to May 1, 2024.

"This ruling is a clear affirmation that firefighters are public employees with rights, including the right to participate in our democracy by seeking elected office," Ross said in a statement following the Sept. 12 ruling. He is running again this year for council in this November's election.

"This decision is not just about me," he added. "It's about ensuring that no firefighter in Troy or anywhere in the state of Michigan is ever again treated unfairly for serving both our city and our democracy."
