The former president of France Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison , after being convicted of criminal conspiracy. ‌

The 70-year-old was found guilty by the Paris Judicial Court on Thursday, September 25, a verdict he is expected to appeal. He was also handed a fine of €100,000 following the three-month trial . ‌

French news outlet Le Monde reported that he will be “summoned within one month by the prosecutor’s office to be informed of his incarceration date”, but his appeal will not suspend his sentence . ‌

Sarkozy was convicted of one charge, but acquitted of others in a trial over the illegal funding of his presidential campaign in 2007 with money from the government of Muammar Gaddafi, the then-Prime Minister of Libya .
