SEATTLE — Starbucks says it will lay off "approximately 900" employees and close many of its open positions as part of a major restructuring.

The company says its total number of locations in North America will decline "by about 1%" in fiscal year 2025. The company will have "nearly 18,300 total Starbucks locations" at year end, 124 fewer than the prior year.

"While we’re making good progress, there is much more to do to build a better, stronger, and more resilient Starbucks," Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said in a letter Thursday morning.
