A Bessemer man charged in the shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend claims he fired in self-defense.

Alfred Lee Colvin III, 32, is charged with capital murder in the slaying of 29-year-old Angelicca Amber Newton. The victim was about six weeks pregnant when she was killed.

Colvin went before Jefferson County Bessemer Cutoff Judge David Carpenter on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

When it ended, the judge forwarded the case to a grand jury for indictment consideration.

The shooting happened just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21 , in a vehicle on Fifth Street North and Sixth Avenue North in Lipscomb.

Colvin is represented by attorney Emory Anthony.
