A man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after being shot in the leg in Saugus’ Cliftondale Square Wednesday night, police said.

Saugus Police received a call reporting a shooting on Lincoln Avenue around 8:09 p.m. Wednesday. Arriving officers found both the victim and suspect on scene, Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli said in a statement released by a spokesperson.

The two men are believed to have been involved in a road rage incident that escalated to the point of the suspect shooting the man in the leg, police said.

The victim, a 32-year-old from Melrose, was taken to a hospital with a serious, but non-life-threatening wound to his leg, police said. At the scene, police arrested 48-year-old Stephen Cooper, of Saugus.
