King of Foxes: Hall of Shame
Olivia Street’s indie-rock project King of Foxes has returned this year with a new EP, Hall of Shame. As you’ve likely deduced from the title, Street addresses feelings of insecurity, inadequacy and regret on this tight collection of six songs, which continues her retro-tinged indie rock sound.
Hall of Shame has a brattier bent than the smooth, easy-to-digest songs of 2022’s Twilight of the Empire . Here, Street sings with a wounded heart on her sleeve, echoes of Liz Phair, divulging raw thoughts over crunchy guitar riffs that border on mall-punk and ’90s radio-friendly grunge. Her ability to construct concise choruses with heavy dollops of harmony keeps these tracks from sinking into self-pitying dirges.
