Boston police officers shot an unclothed man armed with a large knife after he allegedly broke into a popular Beacon Hill restaurant early Wednesday, police and witnesses said.

Around 6 a.m., police confronted the man in an alley behind 1928 Beacon Hill , a restaurant on Mount Vernon Street, Police Superintendent Paul McLaughlin said at a news conference.

An officer discharged a Taser striking the man, but it had no effect, McLaughlin said. Police officers then opened fire, striking the man multiple times, McLaughlin said.

“Officers then discharged their department-issued firearms multiple times, striking the individual,” McLaughlin said.

Officers provided first aid and the man was taken to a local hospital with injuries that McLaughlin said were not life-threatening. Police di
