Members of Winnipeg’s cycling community are planning a vigil Friday evening to honour two riders killed earlier this month on Kenaston Boulevard.

Friends, family and supporters will gather at Kenaston and Enterprise Drive, where 25-year-old Kerry Bonner and 31-year-old Egor Popov were struck and killed on Sept. 13 while cycling along the roadway shoulder. The pair had been riding to Ikea to buy a gift for a nephew’s birthday.

Organizers say the event will include a ride from Central Park, a candlelight vigil and the installation of a white “ghost bike” — in this case a tandem bicycle — to mark the spot where the couple died. Ghost bikes are used worldwide to memorialize people killed while cycling.
