CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WV News) — The Spotted Lanternfly, an invasive species not native to West Virginia, has been confirmed to have established populations in multiple areas across the state.
Originally hailing from east Asia, the Spotted Lanternfly feeds on sap within trees, causing them to lose nutrients, growing sick and frail.
Spotted Lanternflies reproduce quickly, and if left unchecked can ravage native forests and fruit crops.
"The West Virginia Department of Agriculture is attempting to kill this insect after it was recently reported in a new area to try to stop its spread," said Carlos Quesada, entomology expert at the WVU Extension. "Once the insect is well established in an area, it's difficult to eradicate."
