PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – In the heart of Portland’s Central Eastside, a small theater with a big mission has spent decades elevating Latino voices—and during Hispanic Heritage Month, that mission is taking center stage.

Founded in 1995 by married partners José González and Dañel González, Milagro Theatre began with a bold vision: to create a Latino theatre in a city where Latinos made up just four percent of the population.

Today, Milagro is recognized as one of the top 10 Latino arts organizations in the nation. Its name, which means “miracle,” reflects both the odds it faced and the impact it has made.

“Whatever it was in this soil or in this air or this environment, it helped us to thrive,” said González.
