AKRON, Ohio — The city of Akron has announced it will partner with the nationally renowned Police Executive Research Forum to conduct a full review of its police department's use-of-force policies.
City Council approved the more than $300,000 price tag for the review this past June following a number of high-profile incidents involving police officers using lethal force, including the in 2022 and the deaths of 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker and 54-year-old Michael Jones in 2024. According to officials, PERF will lead the effort by talking to members of the department and other community members while also examining all relevant documents and policies before developing a list of recommendations, which are expected to be made public no later than March of 2026.
