NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Millions of New Yorkers are set to receive more paid time off to handle personal and family needs, thanks to a newly passed law expanding worker protections in the city.
The legislation, introduced by City Council Member Sandy Nurse and approved Thursday afternoon, strengthens New York City’s Earned Safe and Sick Leave Law, extending benefits to over 3 million private-sector employees.
Currently, most private employers in New York City must provide either paid or unpaid sick leave: • Small businesses with fewer employees are required to offer 40 hours of leave. • Larger employers must provide 56 paid leave hours annually.
Starting January, the updated law goes further by adding 20 hours of paid leave specifically for pregnancy-related care.
