WINDHAM, Maine (WMTW) - It has been nearly a month since William “Bill” Diamond died and the town has now planned a public memorial .

Diamond died on Aug. 31. He spent his life in service to his community, beginning as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in Windham schools. He later served in both the Maine Senate and the Maine House and was the Maine secretary of state from 1989 to 1996.

He also helped to found organizations like the Windham Land Trust, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and the “Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” program.

“Bill’s story is one of inspiration—a boy from a small farm in West Gardiner who rose to some of the highest offices in our state, all while remaining deeply rooted in his community here in Windham,” said the town of Windham in a social media post on Wedne
