City council is showing support for ending Yellowknife’s long-running amnesty days at the landfill and replacing the program with a new voucher system.
The issue was discussed during Monday’s Governance and Priorities Committee meeting as a revised memorandum from city staff recommends a one-voucher-per-household model as a more controlled and cost-effective way for residents to dispose of waste.
Most councillors supported the shift, citing high operational costs, public safety risks and an increasing strain on city resources. The amnesty days program, in place since 2005, has allowed residents to dump household waste for free — excluding surcharge items — but the city says the event has outlived its usefulness.
