ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Alexis Parker is a breast cancer survivor.
“I was diagnosed on August 22nd of 2016 with triple negative breast cancer. It was so aggressive I went from stage 2 to stage 3 in a matter of a week,” Parker said.
Parker grew up in north St. Louis County next to Coldwater Creek and played in the creek often, not knowing it was contaminated with radioactive waste from nuclear bomb production.
Parker is one of the 180 in the St. Louis area who’ve applied for compensation under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) . Missouri U.S. Senator Josh Hawley sponsored legislation that reauthorizes RECA and expands it to include Missouri residents sickened by exposure to improperly stored and handled radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project.
