MADISON, Wis. — Public Health Madison & Dane County on Wednesday issued an overdose spike alert.
PHMDC said EMS in the area responded to five confirmed overdoses on Tuesday.
“Anything that's five or more is concerning to us,” Julia Olsen, public health supervisor for PHMDC, said. “We had several people mention that they thought it was heroin. We've also heard that they may have needed more Narcan to be revived than a single dose.”
It's unclear what caused the spike; however, PHMDC said there may be a change in the makeup of street drugs in the community that might include opiates, fentanyl or other synthetic drugs.
“For us, it just means that we need to be more vigilant,” Allison Fieber said.
