FRANKLIN COUNTY, Arkansas — Both major political parties have decided how they plan to move forward in the process of filling Arkansas's Senate District 26 seat vacancy.

The seat was left vacant after Sen. Gary Stubblefield died on Sept. 2. Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders certified the seat vacancy on Monday, Sept. 15, two days after Stubblefield was honored and laid to rest in Franklin County.

The governor asked Republican Party of Arkansas Chairman Joseph Wood and Democratic Party of Arkansas Chairman Col. Marcus Jones to determine if the respective parties want to hold a special primary election or convention of delegates to fill the seat.

Both parties decided on Sept. 24 that each will hold special primary elections.
