Edmonton Elks owner Larry Thompson died following a weeks-long battle with complications due to surgery, the club announced Thursday.

The news comes just 13 months after Thompson and his wife, Deb, took over private ownership of the Canadian Football League organization, which had been community-owned for 75 years.

Deb will continue to own the team and carry through with her husband’s vision and dedication.

“Our family is devastated with the loss of our anchor,” Deb said in a press release. “Larry was a legend and our family will continue his legacy far beyond our lifetimes.

“Owning EE was a lifelong dream, my only regret is he isn’t here to enjoy it. I will continue to support the club and community as it has become my dream, as well as of our family.”
