What is brain rot?
While not a clinical diagnosis, brain rot describes the "deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state," often caused by overconsumption of material, particularly online, according to Oxford University Press.
Oxford University also reported a 230% increase in the term's use between 2023 and 2024, amid concerns about the impact of consuming "excessive amounts of low-quality online content."
The term was named Oxford Dictionary's Word of the Year for 2024.
