NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Everyone loves a furry friend, but some pets get a bad rap — and get passed up at shelters.

The “black cat stigma” affects shelters across the country, and one East Texas shelter is looking to get ahead of the problem, hosting a black cat adoption event to try to clear their cages before the month of October.

Jennifer Bryant is the executive director of the Humane Society of Nacogdoches County, who is helping sponsor the adoption and vaccine fees for black cats for the Nacogdoches Animal Shelter’s Black Cat Bonanza event.

“Not nice things happen to black cats during the month of October. If we can get them out and into their homes before October, they don’t have to sit here in a shelter environment for a whole month,” Bryant explained.
