CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A Cedar Rapids man who lost his home when his Shamrock Apartment complex caught fire is moving into his new home.

The fire last Tuesday at the 400 block of Jacolyn Drive SW drew nearly every city fire unit. The complex is now uninhabitable.

Don Byerly lived in the bottom unit of the complex for over 20 years. He said the building management offered him a new unit the very next day after the fire, and he moved into the new home.

“Still have to put some things on the wall, but that comes,” he said.

Making the change hasn’t been easy. All his new furniture is from his mother, who passed away.

“I have other things that are coming that will be delivered here in the next few days, but that’s what a lot of this is,” said Byerly.
