SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) -- Savannah Technical College (STC) students got hands-on experience Thursday helping restore a piece of the city's history.
The once-in-a-lifetime restoration of the Green-Meldrim House dome has been completed, with STC students studying in the Historic Preservation Program playing a key role.
Under the guidance of preservation experts, the students repaired intricate plaster ornamentation and the glass oculus, learning techniques rarely practiced today.
The project marks the first comprehensive renovation of the dome in decades.
The Green-Meldrim House is a national historic landmark and the former headquarters of General Sherman during the Civil War. It will continue to welcome visitors for tours with the restored dome shining as a centerpiece.
