HMRC is making a "significant" change to how unpaid taxes are collected. HMRC and the Labour Party government are cracking down on people who owe unpaid tax by turning up unannounced at debtors' doors.

Staff at the taxman are also taking money directly from their bank accounts. HMRC has previously had the power to take money from bank accounts since 2015, but paused the scheme during the Covid crisis, which began in 2020.

It has now resumed the powers in what tax experts have branded is a "significant power shift". Taxpayers and businesses owing established debts over £1,000 – and who have exhausted the timetable for appealing the amount owed – will be targeted.
