Concerns about the condition of several old bridges that provide the only access to private properties along Henrico’s riverside have culminated in a deal for the county to take ownership of a 5-mile stretch of the historic Kanawha Canal.

Henrico supervisors this week authorized the county to acquire the portion of the canal generally between Chippenham Parkway and Powhite Parkway in Richmond from CSX, which owns the man-made waterway and the railroad that runs along it.

Under the deal, Henrico will buy the canal property, which totals 65 acres, for $1.
