The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday (September 25) cancelled the FCRA license of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s organisation. This came a day after four people were killed in police firing in Leh during a violent protest for statehood which, the MHA said, was “incited” by Wangchuk’s “provocative statements”.
The CBI in July had initiated a preliminary inquiry into alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act by Wangchuk’s NGO, Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh.
What is the FCRA?
The FCRA was enacted during the Emergency in 1976 amid apprehensions that foreign powers were interfering in India’s affairs by pumping money into the country through independent organisations. These concerns were actually even older, having been expr
