There used to be an unwritten rule among sports fans.

It was OK to boo the professional athletes when they screwed up. They were, after all, getting paid big bucks to bring glory to your team, and when they didn't deliver as expected, they were fair game for the catcalls.

But it was not OK to boo the college kids. Expressing disdain for the coach and his multi-million-dollar pay package would be acceptable, but not for the amateur athletes who were busting their butts for the glory of their school.

So it was a bit surprising last Saturday when the Camp Randall crowd erupted in a chorus of boos as the Badgers, trailing 20-0 after a lackluster first half, went jogging off to the locker room.

My first reaction was to feel sorry for those college kids on the football team having to endure
