Baker Mayfield was riding high after beating the Jets last weekend.
Though now a Pro Bowler with the Buccaneers, the No. 1 overall pick had an bumpy journey to Tampa Bay. After Cleveland, Mayfield had stops in Carolina and Los Angeles before landing with the Buccaneers.
“Their D-coordinator (Steve Wilks) was the one who cut me in Carolina. So, a lot of stuff was personal today,” Mayfield said after a 29-27 win over New York.
There’s only one problem with that, which Wilks pointed out in a Jets press conference on Friday morning.
“I don’t think an interim coach has much say over personnel,” Wilks said (via ESPN’s Rich Cimini). “If that were the case, I wouldn’t have gotten rid of our best player, Christian McCaffrey.”
