ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - Louisiana is experiencing a surge in West Nile virus activity this season, with state health officials confirming more than 1,000 mosquito samples have tested positive for the virus.

The Louisiana Department of Health reported 1,093 West Nile virus (WNV) positive mosquito samples across the state in 2025.

Allen Parish Mosquito Control says 32 of those positive tests came from its parish, out of 296 samples sent to LSU’s disease testing lab.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes after first spreading from birds. It is considered a seasonal epidemic in North America, typically flaring up in summer and continuing through the fall.
