GRAND FORKS — The Grand Forks County Commission voted Friday to assume oversight of the local Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.
WIC is a federal assistance program that provides resources like healthy foods, breastfeeding support and nutrition education geared toward pregnant, recently pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as infants and children under the age of 5. It was previously administered by Red River Valley Community Action, a Grand Forks-based nonprofit that shut down earlier this month after financial difficulties.
The program is 100% federally funded and will incur no additional costs for the county to operate, according to County Administrator Tom Ford. It also comes with a $6,000 reimbursement from the federal government to offset
