PHOENIX (KVOA) - The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) has launched the SAFE Alert program on Friday which will replace the existing Silver Alert system.

According to AZDPS, the SAFE Alert program, launched on Sept. 26, aims to enhance the notification process for missing vulnerable individuals, including seniors and those with cognitive or developmental disabilities. It will expand the criteria for alerts and mandates biannual training for law enforcement on the protocol.

A SAFE Alert will be issued when a law enforcement agency confirms several criteria. The missing person must be 65 years of age or older, suffer from Alzheimer's disease or dementia, or have a diagnosed developmental or cognitive disability.
