SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - State lawmakers have spoken with Dakota News Now following several deaths and more reports of violent outbreaks within the walls of the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Unrest is prevailing at the State Penitentiary as six stabbings have been reported, with no serious injuries to those involved.

As the Department of Corrections and the Attorney General’s Division of Criminal Investigation look into Thursday night’s violence, there are more questions about safety for both inmates and staff.

In the last three days, there have been three reported inmate deaths. One by suicide, another death discovered in a cell and another in medical care.

Several lawmakers discussed the steps they think still need to be taken.
