SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A new mural at the Sioux Falls Food Co+op highlights the global farmers behind local food products as part of Fairtrade Month.
The artwork, painted by Sioux Falls artist Erin Castle, featured Marie Ronnette Botramisy, a vanilla farmer from Madagascar whose crop is used in Ben & Jerry’s ice cream sold at the co-op.
Becky Squyer, director of marketing and community outreach for the co-op, said the mural brought the Fairtrade story full circle.
“The whole kind of storyline of the mural is that we have a woman farmer, and she is an actual farmer in Madagascar,” explained Squyer. “She farms the vanilla beans that go into the Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, we sell the Ben and Jerry’s, so it’s just a really awesome full circle moment to spread awareness and pa
