Western Australia's environmental regulator is investigating the alleged illegal clearing of hundreds of hectares of native trees on a property north of Perth.

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) has issued a vegetation conservation notice to the owners of the site on Djarlma Road in Chittering, 60 kilometres north of the state capital.

The notice stated that illegal clearing was suspected on the property, owned by Bocalusa Properties Pty Ltd, after DWER inspected the area and reviewed satellite imagery.

The Shire of Chittering issued a stop-work order at the former pine tree plantation last week.

It came after claims bulldozers and drag chains were being used to clear part of the 485-hectare property.
