After announcing the end of pickup-only locations last summer, Starbucks has announced further closures .

On Thursday, CEO Brian Niccol told employees announced that, by the time the fiscal year closes next week, their number of coffee shops will drop from 18,374 to about 18,300, representing about 430 closures across the U.S. and Canada, about 1% of North American stores.

Is Starbucks firing employees?

Starbucks will be reducing 900 "current non-retail partner roles" and are being notified today. Niccol said they will be offered "generous severance and support packages including benefits extensions."

Also, employees at closing locations will be notified and be eligible for transfer to nearby locations.
