ATHENS, WV (WVNS) - Imagine going from one of the top prospects in sports to a notorious cautionary tale. This has been the reality for former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf.

Ryan Leaf rose to prominence as a Heisman contender at Washington State before being selected as a first-round pick in the NFL draft. Unfortunately, struggles with ego, substance abuse, and mental health landed the star in a Montana prison. Leaf says it was his time behind bars which would ultimately save his life.

"Life isn't fair. I don't care if you're a starting NFL quarterback. Life isn't fair - it's about how you deal with it that matters, period," he said during a visit to Concord University. "You can only control three things, that's it, ever - your attitude, your behavior, and your effort."
