Friday was four days since the autumn equinox but patience still was required of the fanciers of fall, because the warmth of summer still seemed to linger in Washington in the late September sunshine.

Even after the equinox, summer is not required to leave town overnight. At the same time, full-fledged fall cannot be expected to make an instantaneous arrival. Not, at any rate, where temperatures are concerned, and temperatures obviously matter.

Perhaps the single most salient characteristic of any day is the heat thereof. Or the lack of it. There was no lack of warmth in Washington on Friday, as the mercury rose to 85 degrees.
