BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo family from the Democratic Republic of Congo now has a safe place to call home, thanks to Habitat for Humanity.
A ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony was held Friday outside the new house on Bird Avenue on the city's West Side.
The home was built for Fabrice Sabiti Oyo, who became a U.S. citizen after fleeing war and violence in his home country. Hundreds of volunteers spent the past year constructing the house, dedicating nearly 5,000 hours to the project.
"My tribe was accused of not belonging to that country, Democratic Republic of Congo. In my young age, I saw a human heart. My mom was chopped off the head. My young brother was lost," Fabrice said.
He also survived his own attack, being stabbed in the neck.
