New Delhi, Sept 27: Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the discovery of natural gas in the Andaman basin, confirming its potential as a significant energy source.
The gas was found at the Sri Vijayapuram 2 well, located 17 km from the Andaman Islands shore, at a depth of 295 meters. Initial testing showed gas presence with 87% methane content.
Puri highlighted this as a major step towards verifying hydrocarbon richness in the region, aligning with similar discoveries from Myanmar to Indonesia.
The discovery supports India’s National Deep Water Exploration Mission, aiming for energy self-reliance and coordination with global exploration experts.
