LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- An accused serial rapist who is in the United States illegally and agreed to a plea deal withdrew his plea at what was supposed to be his sentencing on Thursday.
Carlos Nava, 49, pleaded guilty through an 'Alford plea' to one felony charge of sexual assault with use of a deadly weapon on July 30, according to court records. Through an 'Alford plea,' a defendant acknowledges prosecutors may have enough evidence to lead to a conviction but does not admit guilt.
"It's really hard for someone to maintain 'I didn't do this' when his sperm is in places that indicate he probably did," Clark County Deputy District Attorney Julia Barker said as she referred to DNA tying Nava to the crimes.
Through the plea deal, eight charges against Nava were dropped, but now they are reinst
