Kris Letang and Erik Karlsson were not in the Penguins lineup for their first preseason win Friday night, nor were many of the team’s other stars for that matter. But on a few surprising sequences, Jack St. Ivany sure did an admirable impression of them.
Yes, the same Jack St. Ivany who was billed as a defense-only blue-liner in the past.
Some of that was a change in the Penguins’ offensive approach under a new coach. But St. Ivany is also trying to assert himself in the crowded competition on defense.
“I think it’s just kind of having confidence that when a play is there, try to make something happen,” St. Ivany said Friday. “I don’t think I need to be like 58 or 65 out there. But I feel like if I can contribute on that side of things, it’s very positive.”
